While Saturday, July 23 was another day of golf or going to the lake or mowing grass for many on the south side of Birmingham, for more than 500 mostly men and boys in the Hoover city school system it was a day to put their handyman skills to good use at the 14 schools in the system.
It was the second Dad Brigade event for the system. Former school board president Derrick Murphy came up with the idea and coordinated both events–with a lot of help from sponsors such as Home Depot, Chick-fil-A, Zaxby’s, Gresham, Smith & Partners, Pete’s Print, Alabama Rentals, Hoover Mayor Gary Ivey, councilman Gene Smith and mayoral candidate Frank Brocato.
The volunteers painted, pressure washed, spread pine straw, trimmed shrubs, caulked seams, picked up trash, cleaned gutters and tackled an assortment of other activities.
What a great show of community spirit and school support. And what a neat idea for other systems to try as well.
