The Phenix City school system plans to open the $2.1 million Dyer Family STEM Center next August. State superintendent Tommy Bice recently toured the construction site and came away not just impressed, but more like overwhelmed.
“There is not another one of these anywhere I know of,” said Bice.
The 9,500 sq. ft. facility will house eight labs and provide a hands-on learning environment for science, technology, engineering and math. Each lab is supported by at least a $25,000 contribution from a local business. And the entire facility is financed through local donors and the local school system. No state funding is involved.
“They’ve all come together to create this,” said Bice. “The school system could have never done this on their own. The learning opportunities it will give kids here in Phenix City is unmatched.
