What prevents many students from success in school? According to a survey of the 2015 Teachers of the Year, the top three barriers are family stress, poverty and learning and psychological problems. These were selected, in order, by 76 percent of the teachers, 63 percent and 52 percent.
For more info about the survey, conducted by the Council of Chief State School Officers and Scholastic Inc., see this article in the Washington Post.
Interestingly enough, no one mentions the lack of more school choice, lack of charter schools, lack of vouchers–all of which are promoted endlessly in Alabama by the out–of-state “experts” our legislative leaders listen to. And take money from.
For reasons that I don’t need to explain, I put more faith in what this group of teachers say than I do in what the lobbyists say.
