Why Doesn’t Rep. Terri Collins Trust Alabama Educators?

We have explored the topic of A-F school reports cards over and over.  And recently we pointed out that info Rep. Collins (who has promoted this bill since 2012)  had sent to all state school board members trying to make a case for the merit of A-F was virtually worthless.

The assumption by board members I talked to was that the info Rep. Collins spread around must have been generated by her or her staff since it was not attributed to another source.  But this was not the case at all.

Both documents were prepared by Christy Hovanetz, the A-F specialist at the Foundation for Excellence in Education.  This is a foundation former Florida Governor Jeb Bush created to tout the benefits of charter schools, vouchers, etc.  It is at the forefront of the “corporate education reform” movement.  As you see here, donors to FEE are a who’s who of those working hard to privatize schools across the country.  The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Michael Bloomberg, Eli Broad, Dick & Betsy DeVos.

There are more than 130 school superintendents in Alabama, about 1,400 school principals and nearly 40,000 teachers.  It is sad that an Alabama legislator ignores all these voices and turns instead, to some out-of-state think tank for propaganda to try and make her case for what will improve our schools.
